Pet photo apps: where do your photos actually go?
Plenty of apps ask for your photos. Few tell you where those photos go.
The tell is simpler than you'd think — look at where the computing happens.
If it happens on your phone, your photo has no reason to leave. If it happens on a server, it has to leave.

This isn't "cloud is bad." Some things a phone simply can't do without a server. But your pet's photo sitting on someone else's server is a fact worth knowing before you tap Allow, not after.
How to tell which one you're using
- Turn on airplane mode and try it. If the photo still processes, it's happening on your phone. (The one exception: the first run may need internet once to download a recognition model.)
- If there are "credits" or a usage limit, it's probably server-side. Companies don't meter work your own phone does for free.
- Read the Play Store "Data safety" section. It states whether photos or videos are collected.
- If it finishes in a couple of seconds with no upload progress bar, that points to on-device.
The catch in the word "on-device"
On-device doesn't mean no internet ever. Many apps download the recognition model once, up front — that's normal. What matters is whether your photo is uploaded, not whether the app talks to the network at all.
And one more: an app that never sends your photos can still send anonymous stats — install counts, app version, country. That's a completely different thing from "uploads my pictures." No need to lump them together and panic.
